NEA Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity (SOGI) Committee

I was appointed to the NEA Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity (SOGI) Committee in 2022 and have worked alongside other LGBTQ+ educators from across the country to identify ways to better support queer and trans educators and students, provide input on trainings and resources for NEA members regarding LGBTQ+ issues, advocate for legislation and policy that protects queer and trans educators and youth, and work with the NEA Ethnic Minority Affairs Committee (EMAC) and the NEA Committee on Women's Issues to celebrate and lift up opportunities to incorporate the beautiful intersectionality of identities of our members.

2018-present

National Council of Urban Education Associations (NCUEA)

The National Council of Urban Education Associations (NCUEA) is a council within NEA that provides materials, trainings, conferences, and connections for locals and local leaders. Their focus is empowering locals to do union work. I've been able to learn from huge powerhouse unions like United Teachers of Los Angeles (UTLA), Chicago Teachers Union (CTU), Saint Paul Federation of Educators (SPFE), and Fairfax Education Association in Virginia (FEA) as well as smaller locals who are doing good work like Education Austin, Federal Way Education Association (FWEA), and even our neighbors in Evergreen Education Association.

I also served on the Urban Minority Issues Dialogue (UMID) Committee within NCUEA in 2018 and 2019. We worked to develop a general session for the annual NCUEA conferences featuring local students and educators that brought members into challenging conversations about race, bias, and identity.

I have been an NEA RA delegate since 2018, I've attended a handful of NEA conferences (the NEA Leadership Summit, the NEA LGBTQ+ Issues Conference, and the NEA Ethnic Caucus Symposium), and a GLSEN/NEA GSA Advisors Summit.
