Beaverton Education Association (BEA) Experience
2022-present
Local President of BEA
BEA consists of around 2,700 non-substitute certified educators and 1,100 licensed substitute educators. During my tenure as BEA president, we've worked to increase communication with and engagement of rank and file members, to revolutionize our bargains by inviting any BEA member to not only come to our bargaining sessions, but to join the Bargaining Team in caucus, to train up building reps and Contract Action Team members to organize worksites and run effective 10-minute meetings and climate meetings, and to be politically active in local, state, and national elections. We finished a contentious bargain this February in which we were building up to strike with some solid wins around student and staff safety, plan time, and compensation.
2020-2022
Local Vice President of BEA
I became vice president of BEA in the fall of 2020 as we started a school year in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, and we worked tirelessly to ensure the safety and well-being of educators and students alike. We bargained specific working conditions for Beaverton educators during comprehensive distance learning and limited in-person instruction, as well as a full contract for BEA licensed substitutes.
2015-present
Other experience within BEA
Local Executive Board member, local building rep, bargaining team member (for both substitute and non-substitute educator units), Beaverton Political Action Committee (BPAC), Organizing Cadre (chair), BEA Racial and Social Justice Task Force (chair), Political Campaign Leadership Cohort (we learned about how to recruit and run a campaign for school board members, and then we did just that!).
